Rights Respecting School Award

Co-ordinator- Katie West
Governor- Ruth Fox

About the Award

The Rights Respecting Schools Award is a Unicef UK programme that aims to put children’s rights at the heart of schools in the UK. Unicef work with thousands of schools across the country to embed children’s rights in their ethos and culture to improve well-being and develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential.
We are excited to begin a journey to become fully Rights Respecting. The Award recognises a school's achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC or UNCRC) into practice within the school and beyond.

What could our school look like?

A Unicef UK Rights Respecting School is a community where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted. Children and young people and the school community learn about children’s rights by putting them into practice every day. The Award is not just about what children do but also importantly what adults do – in Rights Respecting Schools, children's rights are promoted and realised and adults and children work towards this together.

This award will pull together everything SMSC, British Values, Pupil Voice, Safeguarding and Healthy Schools.

Progress in gaining the award:

September 2016
The award is up and running in our school and you will begin to see the rights displayed, referred to and talked about within school. The children in each class have drawn up a charter which they have all signed up to, even the teachers have got involved! Their charter is proudly displayed in the staff room. The RRSA Steering Group is ready and raring to get going with the action plan- we are looking for some pupils to join us in our mission! Interviews coming soon....

February 2017
Our action plan is well under way! The CRC are embedded into our curriculum and are referenced in every topic booklet in each year group. The teacher's refer to these in their lessons and the children are able to think about the rights that are being addressed. Our 'In The News' board is updated regularly and includes global issues. In addition to this, UNICEF is included in our worship plan every term. This is linked to current events and traditions. Below is an example of our worship plan and a curriculum booklet where you can see how the rights are referenced.

Next steps...
Mrs West will be working alongside Mrs Duncan, getting the School Council up to speed and hearing their views on how we could improve our practice.
